Cube Against Cancer began in Houston in 2023. Brian Perry had met Matt Lee, a competition organizer, and a competition was organized in which competitors were asked to bring in at least one new 3x3 cube, which would be donated to a cancer patient. Brian had founded Ethan's Ohana in honor of his son Ethan Perry, who passed from cancer in 2021. Ethan learned to solve a cube in the hospital and became obsessed. The cube provided him comfort but was also an excellent tool for aiding fine motor skills and mental acuity impacted by treatment. Ethan's Ohana now donates cubes to cancer patients, bringing joy to children during a difficult time. Cube Against Cancer is now an annual competition series, and in 2025, competitions will be held throughout the United States and Canada, bringing in cubes to donate to kids like Ethan.
